Ryan James Wedding’s 2002 Olympic appearance was for Canada in snowboarding. His name drew international attention again in October 2024, when U.S. prosecutors named him lead defendant in a superseding indictment alleging cocaine trafficking across borders and several murders.

The Justice Department’s October 17 announcement covered Wedding and 15 other defendants. The gravity of the allegations does not make them established facts. An indictment is an accusation, with each defendant presumed innocent unless and until guilt is proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

What prosecutors alleged

According to the 2024 announcement, cocaine moved from Colombia through Mexico and Southern California to Canada and other U.S. locations. Prosecutors described bulk shipments, storage in the Los Angeles area and couriers using long-haul trucks for the Canadian leg.

Wedding faced eight felony counts in that indictment, including drug conspiracies, leading a continuing criminal enterprise, murder and attempted murder. The counts against other defendants were not identical, so the total number of counts in the document should not be presented as the number charged against each person.

Prosecutors also alleged that violence was used to further the operation, including attacks connected to a stolen shipment and a drug debt. Those assertions require the same attribution as the trafficking allegations.

His Olympic background

Wedding represented Canada in snowboarding at the Salt Lake City Games. His sporting history establishes why the case drew a former-Olympian headline. It does not provide evidence for the criminal allegations.

Likewise, nicknames listed by investigators are part of the authorities' description of the case, not proof that a particular allegation has been established in court.

An old fugitive notice needs a date

The October 2024 release described Wedding as a fugitive. That status cannot be carried forward indefinitely: an FBI update says authorities announced his apprehension on January 23, 2026.

This account concerns the charges announced in 2024, with that later capture update included so an old wanted notice is not mistaken for current information. It does not claim a trial outcome or a conviction on those charges.
