Carrie Bradshaw puts teal gloves with a familiar bridal gown. Mary in About Time goes for red. And Danielle in Ever After turns up at a ball with wings on her back. White dress, long veil, walk down the aisle? Screen costumes give us a few more options than that.

We've kept the full photo gallery, including several views of the same outfit. There are movie weddings here, television weddings, a rehearsal and a couple of dresses worn for performances. Some ceremonies don't go ahead at all. Expect plot details as well as clothes.

The Age of Adaline

Blake Lively as Adaline in a long-sleeved wedding dress among seated guests
Source: British Vogue/ Pinterest

Blake Lively's Adaline wears a long-sleeved gown with a soft, gathered skirt. The neckline is high, the veil sits close to her hair, and the bouquet doesn't hide much of the dress. It's a quiet look compared with some of the gowns further down this gallery.

Angus Strathie designed the film's costumes. Adaline's story moves across decades, so the old-fashioned bridal details have a reason to be there.

Father of the Bride (1950)

Elizabeth Taylor plays Kay Banks, whose wedding turns her father Stanley's life upside down. Spencer Tracy gets much of the comedy, but the bridal portrait belongs to Taylor. The full skirt, lace neckline and long veil make a lovely combination.

Helen Rose designed the gown. She also designed Grace Kelly's real wedding dress in 1956, although that doesn't make the two gowns the same design.

The Sound of Music

Julie Andrews as Maria in a full-skirted wedding gown outside a stone church doorway
Source: Pixels/ Pinterest

Maria gets a long train, long sleeves and very little decoration on the dress itself. Julie Andrews wears the gown in the 1965 film, whose costumes were designed by Dorothy Jeakins. The veil sits close to her head before falling out behind her.

Seen against the church doorway in this photograph, the skirt looks especially broad. There are folds to catch the light, but no big floral pattern to distract from the shape. It's a good dress for a long walk down an aisle.

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

Anne Hathaway as Mia wearing a lace-sleeved bridal gown and tiara in The Princess Diaries 2
Source: Popsugar/ Pinterest

Mia makes it to the church in a gown with lace sleeves, a wide neckline and a train trailing well behind her. Anne Hathaway also gets a tiara, a veil and a bouquet large enough to cover much of the fitted bodice.

Then Mia calls off the wedding. She wants to rule Genovia without being forced into a marriage, so the dress gets its big scene without a completed ceremony. Watch her face in the wedding photograph: the royal outfit doesn't settle the question for her.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

Clémence Poésy as Fleur wearing a white gown with a dark bird pattern
Source: Martha Stewart Weddings/ Pinterest

Fleur Delacour's wedding gown is hard to mistake for anyone else's. Clémence Poésy wears a white dress with a dark bird design spreading across the bodice and down the skirt. A black headpiece ties the whole look together.

Fleur is marrying Bill Weasley, played by Domhnall Gleeson. Look closely at the upper half: the birds face one another, giving the strapless neckline its shape.

The Wedding Planner

Jennifer Lopez as Mary in a fitted white dress and veiled cap beside Justin Chambers as Massimo
Source: Martha Stewart Weddings/ Pinterest

For Mary Fiore's planned wedding to Massimo, Jennifer Lopez wears a fitted dress and a small veiled hat. Justin Chambers plays the would-be groom. The outfit is noticeably restrained for a movie so full of wedding arrangements.

The wide neckline leaves the shoulders clear, while the narrow skirt avoids the volume of a ball gown. On Lopez, with the cap and bouquet in place, those simple lines do most of the work.

Steel Magnolias

Julia Roberts as Shelby carrying a large bouquet beside her father in Steel Magnolias
Source: Brides/ Pinterest

Shelby has very definite ideas about her wedding colors. Julia Roberts wears a pale bridal gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline, a full skirt and enough detail to fit the occasion. The large bouquet adds another layer to an already generous silhouette.

Julie Weiss designed the film's costumes. In the photo, Shelby stands beside her father, looking delighted. The gown belongs to that early, celebratory part of the story, before the film asks much harder things of its characters.

How to Marry a Millionaire

Lauren Bacall as Schatze wearing a lace bridal gown and broad white hat
Source: Pinterest

Lauren Bacall's Schatze has a plan for finding a wealthy husband, but love doesn't cooperate with the spreadsheet. Her bridal look pairs a close-fitting lace gown with a broad white hat.

The costumes are credited to Charles Le Maire and Travilla. Bacall carries the outfit with the same confidence she brings to the rest of the film. The hat is especially good: it gives the look a strong outline without hiding the lace or turning the dress into a background detail.

The Princess Bride

Robin Wright as Buttercup wearing a decorated pale gown and crown beside Cary Elwes
Source: Popsugar/ Pinterest

Buttercup doesn't want to marry Prince Humperdinck. Robin Wright wears a pale, richly decorated gown and a crown that leaves no doubt about the royal setting.

Phyllis Dalton designed the film's costumes. The dress looks heavy with ornament, especially beside Westley's dark clothes in this image. It suits the storybook setting, where even an unhappy wedding has to look as though it belongs in an illustrated tale.

Bride Wars

Kate Hudson as Liv in a strapless ball gown and contrasting sash in Bride Wars
Source: Cosmopolitan/ Pinterest

Liv and Emma want the same wedding date at the same venue. The friendship suffers, but the dresses are excellent. Kate Hudson's Liv wears a strapless Vera Wang ball gown with a broad skirt and a contrasting sash.

Anne Hathaway's Emma has a different Vera Wang look, with a closer fit through the body. The two outfits make a useful comparison: one takes up space immediately, while the other gets its shape from the line of the dress.

Downton Abbey: Edith's First Wedding

Laura Carmichael as Edith with her father before the Strallan wedding in Downton Abbey
Source: Rinat Petrov/ Pinterest

The photo shows Lady Edith arriving with her father for her wedding to Sir Anthony Strallan. Laura Carmichael wears a pale, short-sleeved gown under a long veil. The flowers and headpiece add detail without a huge skirt.

This is the ceremony that ends in heartbreak, not Edith's later marriage to Bertie Pelham. Her clothes are ready for a happy day even when the groom isn't.

Fifty Shades Freed

Dakota Johnson as Ana wearing a fitted lace gown with a long train in Fifty Shades Freed
Source: Livingly/ Pinterest

Look behind Ana and you'll see how far the lace train spreads across the floor. From the front, Dakota Johnson's wedding dress is much closer to her body, with sleeves down to her wrists and a neckline that leaves her shoulders bare.

This is the Monique Lhuillier gown Ana wears to marry Christian, played by Jamie Dornan. The pale flowers around her echo the lace, but the dress remains easy to pick out. The length at the back gives it the grand entrance the front alone might not suggest.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Nia Vardalos as Toula and John Corbett as Ian leaving their wedding
Source: Popsugar/ Pinterest

Toula's wedding clothes aren't a small undertaking. Nia Vardalos wears a full-skirted gown, long veil and plenty of decoration for her marriage to Ian Miller, played by John Corbett. Everything has to hold its own against a very enthusiastic family.

The outfit fits the comedy because it's so much to manage. There's fabric around her arms, across the bodice and out behind her. Here, even getting the bride through the day feels like a group project.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss wearing a large ruffled white gown on the interview stage
Source: Pinterest

Katniss wears this white gown for an interview, not a wedding ceremony. Jennifer Lawrence has to stand in a dress that seems to fill the stage around her. The ruffled skirt piles up beneath a sculptural bodice.

Tex Saverio created the gown in collaboration with costume designer Trish Summerville. In the story, Cinna is the designer behind Katniss's clothes.

Moulin Rouge!

Nicole Kidman as Satine amid dancers in the theatrical finale of Moulin Rouge!
Source: Pinterest

There isn't much empty space in Satine's big performance scene. Nicole Kidman's pale costume has to compete with red, pink and gold all around her, including a whole stage of dancers. The bridal styling is part of the show within the film, not a conventional wedding ceremony.

Catherine Martin and Angus Strathie won the costume design Oscar in 2002 for Moulin Rouge! You can see the appeal in this crowded frame: even with all that color behind her, Satine is easy to find.

Downton Abbey: Mary's Second Wedding

Michelle Dockery as Mary in a hat beside Matthew Goode as Henry at their wedding
Source: Frock Flicks/ Pinterest

Michelle Dockery's Lady Mary takes a different approach for her marriage to Henry Talbot. The dress has a softer, less formal outline than her first bridal gown, and she wears a hat instead of a long veil.

The photo lets you see how well the hat sits with the neckline. Mary is smiling beside Henry, played by Matthew Goode, with flowers close to the front of her dress.

Cinderella (2015)

Lily James as Cinderella in a floral wedding gown beside Richard Madden's prince
Source: Pinterest

Flowers run across the skirt of Cinderella's wedding dress, with more decoration at the ends of the sheer sleeves. Lily James wears it for the final ceremony beside Richard Madden's prince. The train is long enough to spread out behind her as the couple leave.

Sandy Powell designed the costumes, including the much bigger blue gown for the ball. Here she gives Cinderella a paler, quieter look. You still get a full skirt, but the small flowers reward a closer look instead of making one enormous splash of color.

Funny Girl

Barbra Streisand as Fanny wearing a long bridal veil for a Funny Girl stage number
Source: British Vogue/ Pinterest

Barbra Streisand's Fanny Brice wears bridal clothes for the stage number “His Love Makes Me Beautiful.” It's a performance costume, and the scene has a joke to deliver.

Irene Sharaff designed Streisand's costumes. The long veil and decorative neckline make the bridal reference unmistakable, even before the number plays with it. Look at the frame around her face: there's enough ornament there to register from well beyond the front row.

Gone with the Wind

Vivien Leigh as Scarlett in a gown with large sleeves and a full skirt
Source: Playbuzz/ Pinterest

Vivien Leigh's Scarlett O'Hara wears a first wedding outfit whose huge sleeves compete with an already full skirt. Walter Plunkett designed the film's costumes, and this gown is a long way from a sleek modern bridal look.

The dress almost seems to have its own space around it. A narrow red belt in this image gives you somewhere to find Scarlett's waist among the pale fabric. Whatever you think of the character's choices, her clothes rarely let a scene pass unnoticed.

Ever After

Drew Barrymore as Danielle wearing an embroidered ball gown and fairy wings in Ever After
Source: Vogue Paris/ Pinterest

Drew Barrymore's winged gown is the outfit Danielle wears to the ball. It isn't the dress from a wedding ceremony, but the pale color, embroidery and long skirt make it an easy fit for a gallery of bridal-looking screen costumes.

Jenny Beavan designed the film's costumes. The wings are the detail you remember first, then the sleeves and decoration come into focus. It's hardly a practical outfit for moving through a crowd.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Jennifer Garner as Jenny beside Daniel Sunjata as Brad in a possible-future wedding scene
Source: Popsugar/ Pinterest

Jennifer Garner's Jenny wears a strapless gown beside Daniel Sunjata's Brad in this image. It belongs to a possible future shown to Connor, played by Matthew McConaughey, during his ghostly tour of his love life. This isn't a picture of Jenny marrying Connor.

The dress has a fitted upper half and a wide skirt, with a veil falling behind her. Small flowers in her hair add detail around her face. The bridal image gives Connor something quite specific to fear losing.

Downton Abbey: Mary and Matthew

Michelle Dockery as Mary in a long veil beside Dan Stevens as Matthew in Downton Abbey
Source: 100 Layer Cake/ Pinterest

This is Mary with Matthew, her first husband. Michelle Dockery and Dan Stevens stand close together in the wedding portrait, with Mary's long veil falling past her shoulders. The jeweled headpiece sits low against her dark hair.

Her dress is narrow through the body, with long sleeves and a softly gathered front. It belongs to the television series, before the later Downton films. If you compare it with Mary's second wedding outfit, the veil and the length of the sleeves are two of the clearest changes.

The Proposal

Sandra Bullock as Margaret in a high-necked vintage-style bridal gown
Source: sbullock.net/ Pinterest

Sandra Bullock's Margaret wears a high-necked, long-sleeved dress for the planned wedding in Alaska. Ryan Reynolds plays Andrew. The outfit has a deliberately old-fashioned shape, with gathered fabric around the neckline and a loose fall through the body.

The ceremony doesn't end with the couple getting married. Margaret stops it and admits the arrangement behind their engagement. The dress places her inside Andrew's family story at exactly the moment she has to tell them the truth.

Gossip Girl: Lily's Wedding

Kelly Rutherford as Lily in a sleeveless draped wedding dress at an outdoor ceremony
Source: Pinterest

There's a lot of fabric gathered at the front of Lily's wedding dress. It crosses the neckline and continues down through the skirt, with her bouquet held below it. The bare arms keep the outfit from looking too covered up.

Kelly Rutherford wears the gown as Lily for the outdoor ceremony with Bart Bass. In the photograph, the guests sit close enough to get a good look at the folds across the bodice. It's one of Gossip Girl's quieter bridal choices, though the family around this wedding is rarely quiet for long.

Monster-in-Law

Jennifer Lopez as Charlie and Jane Fonda as Viola wearing pale gowns in Monster-in-Law
Source: jlomovies/ Pinterest

Jennifer Lopez plays Charlie, whose future mother-in-law makes wedding planning much more difficult than it needs to be. Her bridal gown has a fitted bodice and a broad skirt, worn with long gloves and a veil.

The photo includes Jane Fonda's Viola in her own conspicuously bridal-looking outfit. Charlie's dress would be pretty in a quiet wedding portrait, but here it also has to survive sharing a room with somebody determined to take over the occasion.

Runaway Bride

Julia Roberts as Maggie in an off-the-shoulder bridal gown outdoors in Runaway Bride
Source: alfemminile.com/ Pinterest

Julia Roberts's Maggie tries several bridal looks during Runaway Bride. This one has a broad neckline, short sleeves and a full skirt. The light catches the fabric in a way that makes the folds and embroidery easier to see.

A gallery could spend a long time on Maggie's wardrobe alone. The dresses change, but the question behind them stays the same: can she reach a ceremony she actually wants to finish?

Funny Face

Audrey Hepburn as Jo wearing a short bridal dress beside Fred Astaire in Funny Face
Source: Tami Bar-lev/ Pinterest

Audrey Hepburn's Jo Stockton wears a short bridal dress with a full skirt, a fitted waist and a veil that stops well above the floor. Fred Astaire stands beside her in this black-and-white image.

The hem leaves room to move. That matters in a film where fashion and dance keep meeting each other. A long train would give you a different picture; this dress keeps the attention on Jo's shape and posture, right down to her feet.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell wearing matching lace wedding outfits and small veiled hats
Source: Martha Stewart Weddings/ Pinterest

Marilyn Monroe's Lorelei and Jane Russell's Dorothy finish the film in matching bridal outfits. The high lace necklines, shorter skirts and small veiled hats make a cheerful pair. Travilla designed the costumes.

Seeing the gowns together is part of the pleasure. One dress might look quite formal on its own, but the doubled silhouette turns the wedding image into something closer to a finale. It's a very different kind of screen bridal look from a lone bride making a grand entrance.

Sweet Home Alabama

Reese Witherspoon as Melanie wearing a sleeveless bridal dress and short face veil
Source: Harper’s Bazaar/ Pinterest

Reese Witherspoon's Melanie arrives for her planned wedding to Andrew Hennings, played by Patrick Dempsey, in a sleeveless gown with a narrow shape. A short face veil adds texture without hiding the clean neckline.

The marriage doesn't go ahead. For this moment, though, the dress belongs to the polished life Melanie has built in New York. The restrained outfit is doing plenty before the wedding starts to unravel.

And Just Like That...

Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie wearing a Vivienne Westwood bridal gown with teal gloves and wrap
Source: James Devaney/ Getty Images

Carrie Bradshaw brings her Vivienne Westwood bridal gown back out in And Just Like That..., giving a familiar dress a different outing. Sarah Jessica Parker pairs it with teal accessories, including a dramatic wrap and long gloves. The skirt still has all its volume.

The color changes how you see the old outfit. Your eye moves from the pale bodice to the teal fabric and back again, rather than treating it as a conventional white wedding look.

Love Actually

Keira Knightley as Juliet in a sheer bridal top beside Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter
Source: market.ltn.com.tw

Juliet's bridal top is sheer enough to show the layer beneath it. Around the shoulders, a wispy trim softens the wide neckline. Keira Knightley wears the outfit beside Chiwetel Ejiofor's Peter, with a small bouquet held between them.

The church wedding turns into a musical surprise, so there are other things to watch besides the clothes. Still, the feather-like details stand out in this close view. Juliet doesn't have a huge skirt or a heavily decorated bodice taking over the frame.

Crazy Rich Asians

Sonoya Mizuno as Araminta wearing a decorated bridal outfit in a flower-lined wedding aisle
Source: Buzzfeed/ Pinterest

Sonoya Mizuno's Araminta has a wedding entrance with water, flowers and an aisle that looks nothing like a plain strip of carpet. Her bridal outfit has a fitted, sparkling upper half and an enormous pale skirt that opens around her.

The contrast is the attraction. Up close, you notice the decoration on the bodice; from farther away, it's the scale of the skirt that registers. Araminta's look has enough presence to hold the center of a very elaborate scene.

Marie Antoinette

Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette in a wide decorated wedding gown during a royal ceremony
Source: Alamy

Kirsten Dunst wears a broad, richly decorated bridal gown in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. Milena Canonero designed the film's costumes. The shape spreads sideways through the skirt, quite unlike the round ball gowns elsewhere in this gallery.

The dress belongs to a court where getting dressed is already a public event. The pale fabric, decorative trim and formal headwear make Dunst look almost enclosed in the role she's arriving to fill.

Mamma Mia!

Amanda Seyfried as Sophie in a tiered bridal gown and veil among her bridesmaids
Source: WhoWhatWear/ Pinterest

Amanda Seyfried's Sophie wears a pale, tiered wedding gown on the Greek island where the story unfolds. The high waist and light-looking skirt give her a softer outline than a tightly fitted bodice would. Ann Roth designed the film's costumes.

The veil falls around Sophie's loose hair, with flowers at the top. In the group photo, the outfit looks at home among the bridesmaids rather than standing apart as something too formal for the setting.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1

Kristen Stewart as Bella wearing a long-sleeved gown beside Robert Pattinson as Edward
Source: Venuelust/ Pinterest

Bella and Edward's wedding comes near the beginning of Breaking Dawn - Part 1, not at the end. Kristen Stewart wears a long-sleeved gown beside Robert Pattinson. From the front, the dress is fairly spare, leaving the neckline and fitted shape easy to see.

Carolina Herrera designed Bella's bridal gown. Its more decorative back gives the look another side as Bella moves through the ceremony.

Romeo + Juliet

Claire Danes as Juliet wearing a simple pale bridal dress and gloves beside Leonardo DiCaprio
Source: TatlerUK/ Pinterest

Claire Danes's Juliet wears a pale, sleeveless dress and gloves for her secret wedding to Leonardo DiCaprio's Romeo. The dress has a close, simple shape that leaves very little distance between the characters in this image.

Kym Barrett designed the film's costumes. The bridal outfit is much quieter than some of the other clothes in Baz Luhrmann's film. That suits a ceremony carried out away from the families and the fighting.

The Notebook

Rachel McAdams as Allie holding a newspaper while wearing a lace wedding dress
Source: Southern Living/ Pinterest

Rachel McAdams's Allie wears an elaborate bridal gown while preparing to marry Lon. The lace neckline sits off her shoulders, and a long veil falls from a decorated headpiece. In this photo, a newspaper has interrupted the bridal preparations.

The outfit is ready for one future while Allie's attention turns toward another. The soft lace, carefully arranged hair and paper in her hands put two parts of the story into the same frame.

27 Dresses: Jane's Turn

Katherine Heigl as Jane wearing a V-neck wedding gown beside James Marsden
Source: Pinterest

After spending so much time attending other people's weddings, Jane Nichols finally wears a gown of her own. Katherine Heigl stands beside James Marsden in a sleeveless dress with a V neckline and a gently full skirt.

The outfit is much less busy than many of Jane's bridesmaid dresses. That's part of its appeal. Her bouquet, veil and narrow straps don't fight for attention, and you can see her smiling face immediately.

The Vow

Rachel McAdams as Paige wearing a short pink bridal dress beside Channing Tatum as Leo
Source: Brides/ Pinterest

Pink is the first thing you notice about Paige's wedding outfit. Rachel McAdams wears a short dress with a gathered skirt, a veil and flowers, standing beside Channing Tatum's Leo. The skirt stops well above the ground, leaving her legs in view.

That shorter hem changes the feel of the wedding picture. There isn't a train to lay out for the camera or a big skirt separating the couple. Paige can stand right next to Leo, with the pale pink fabric gathered neatly around her.

Shotgun Wedding

Jennifer Lopez as Darcy wearing a damaged bridal outfit and boots in Shotgun Wedding
Source: @GaliaLahav / Instagram

Jennifer Lopez's Darcy starts with a very large bridal gown and ends up needing something she can run in. Galia Lahav worked with costume designer Mitchell Travers on the dress for Shotgun Wedding. The design has a full skirt, a fitted bodice and sheer fabric around the shoulders.

The fashion house says the production used 28 versions to follow the dress through the action. The outfit has to look right at the wedding and keep telling the story as the day turns chaotic.

Catching Fire: A Closer Look

Another view of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss wearing the ruffled Catching Fire interview gown
Source: LIONSGATE

The gallery returns to Katniss's gown for another view of its scale. From the fitted waist, the skirt spreads out in pale, uneven layers. The upper half has much sharper lines, with decoration reaching up toward Jennifer Lawrence's shoulders.

In the interview scene, the dress is part of the Capitol's public story about Katniss. Cinna has another message in mind. Its sheer size makes a young woman look like the centerpiece of a show she doesn't control.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Angelina Jolie as Jane wearing a short off-the-shoulder bridal dress beside Brad Pitt
Source: 20 Century Fox

Angelina Jolie's Jane wears a short, off-the-shoulder wedding dress beside Brad Pitt's John. There's a small veil, a close fit through the body and no huge skirt. The pair look more conventionally romantic here than their work as assassins might lead you to expect.

In a film full of action and hidden information, the wedding image gives you a familiar-looking couple for a moment. Jane's dress doesn't announce danger. It leaves that to the story, while keeping the neckline and her face clearly in view.

Attack of the Clones: The Bridal Look

AI-generated Midjourney illustration retained from the original gallery; not an authentic Star Wars film still
Source: midjourney

Padmé and Anakin marry in secret in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones. Natalie Portman's real screen gown was designed by Trisha Biggar, using antique lace. StarWars.com describes how a lace bedspread became part of the costume.

The image retained here is an AI-generated illustration credited to Midjourney in the original gallery, not a film still or evidence of the costume's exact details. For the actual dress, look to the film and the official costume photographs. The covered head and layered lace are central to its bridal silhouette.

Emma (1996)

Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma wearing a high-waisted bridal dress beside Jeremy Northam
Source: BUENA VISTA INTERNATIONAL/MIRAMAX FILMS

Gwyneth Paltrow's Emma wears a high-waisted wedding dress with short, puffed sleeves. The pale fabric and light veil keep the outline soft, while small decorative details stop the gown from looking bare. Jeremy Northam's Mr. Knightley stands beside her.

The wedding outfit belongs to the same period world as the rest of the film, rather than borrowing a modern ball gown for the final scene. In this close view, the sleeve shape is especially clear. You don't need a giant train to recognize a formal occasion.

27 Dresses: The Wedding Party

A wider view of Katherine Heigl's Jane and the wedding party in 27 Dresses
Source: 20th Century Fox

This second image of Jane's wedding gives the dress some company. Katherine Heigl stands among the wedding party, and the clean V neckline and pale skirt remain easy to pick out. The bridesmaid beside her wears a light yellow dress.

Seeing the outfit at a wider angle is useful after the earlier portrait. It shows how Jane's choice sits among other people's wedding clothes, which has been her problem throughout the film. This time, she's the bride.

Gossip Girl: Blair's Two Gowns

Composite of Leighton Meester as Blair in a pale wedding gown and a blue lace bridal dress
Source: The CW/Warner Bros.

Leighton Meester's Blair Waldorf gets two very different bridal looks. The pale gown for her wedding to Louis has a fitted bodice and a much fuller skirt. Her later blue dress, worn to marry Chuck, follows her body more closely and brings the decoration up around her shoulders.

Putting the images together makes the difference clear. One look belongs to a grand, formal ceremony; the other is shorter on ceremony but hardly short on fashion. The color is what you notice first in the second dress. Then the lace, sleeves and hem pull you in.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Margot Robbie as Naomi in a full wedding gown beside Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan
Source: Paramount Pictures

Naomi's skirt takes up a good part of the wedding photograph. Margot Robbie stands beside Leonardo DiCaprio's Jordan, with the veil falling behind her and a large bouquet held at her waist. The guests have dressed for a grand occasion, too.

Martin Scorsese's film puts plenty of money on display, and the wedding clothes fit that world. The full skirt is easy to spot even with so many people gathered around the couple. A close, plain dress would give you a rather different picture.

About Time

Rachel McAdams as Mary wearing a red wedding dress beside Domhnall Gleeson as Tim and guests
Source: Universal

Rachel McAdams's Mary gets married in red. The color changes the wedding photograph immediately, especially beside the guests' lighter clothes. Domhnall Gleeson plays Tim, standing with her outside in a scene that has very little interest in looking perfectly controlled.

The dress has short sleeves and a fitted upper half, with a skirt that leaves room for movement. After so many white gowns, this one is a reminder that the wedding scene can stay completely recognizable without following the usual bridal color.

The Godfather

Simonetta Stefanelli as Apollonia and Al Pacino as Michael during a church wedding in The Godfather
Source: Youtube / Bib48_MovieClips / Silver Screen Collection

Simonetta Stefanelli plays Apollonia, who marries Michael Corleone during his time in Sicily. Al Pacino stands beside her for the ceremony. Her dress has a high lace neckline, long sleeves and a veil that frames her face.

The outfit is formal and covered, with much of its texture gathered around the upper body. It's a very different wedding image from the Corleone celebration that opens the film, even though both belong to the same family story.

Four Weddings and a Funeral

Andie MacDowell as Carrie wearing a long-sleeved lace wedding dress and veil
Source: Rank Film Distributors

Andie MacDowell's Carrie wears a long-sleeved lace wedding dress with a veil and gloves. Rowan Atkinson's nervous cleric may steal another ceremony in the film, but Carrie's outfit has enough detail to deserve its own look.

The fitted shape keeps the lace from becoming a shapeless layer. You might love the covered neckline or find it too formal for your own taste; either way, the pieces belong together. The dress is a useful contrast with the shorter, looser bridal outfits in this gallery.

Kill Bill: Vol. 2

Two black-and-white views of Uma Thurman as Beatrix in a pale wedding rehearsal dress
Source: Miramax

Uma Thurman's Beatrix wears bridal clothes for a wedding rehearsal that ends in violence. The pale dress is relatively plain, with a fitted upper half and a loose fall through the skirt. Flat-looking sandals make it feel less formal than many of the other outfits here.

The photographs are spare, too. Without a crowded reception or elaborate flowers around her, you notice the dress and Beatrix's posture. It's a bridal image with very little celebration in it.

Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1997)

Composite of Brandy as Cinderella in formal gowns, including her bridal look beside Paolo Montalban
Source: Cinderella (1997, TV Movie) / IMDB

Brandy plays Cinderella in the 1997 television musical, with Paolo Montalban as her prince and Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother. The final wedding gives Cinderella another gown after the blue dress she wears to the ball. This one has a pale, full skirt, a fitted bodice and long gloves.

Ellen Mirojnick designed the costumes. The wedding image belongs to a world where a tiara and an enormous skirt don't feel like unusual choices. They fit right in with the palace and the ceremony. Brandy's dress can be extravagant without looking out of place.

Enchanted

Amy Adams as Giselle raising her arms in a wedding gown with very large puffed sleeves
Source: 'Enchanted' (2007), Buena Vista Pictures/Everett Collection

Amy Adams's Giselle arrives in New York wearing a wedding gown that takes up a remarkable amount of space. The huge sleeves, full skirt and decorative bodice make sense in Andalasia, the animated world she comes from. In Manhattan, the same clothes become a practical problem.

The exaggerated bridal styling is part of the joke. You can admire the gown and still laugh at how difficult it is to wear outside its own story. The image catches Adams with her arms raised, giving you a good view of those sleeves. Few dresses in this gallery explain a character's predicament quite so quickly.

Frankenstein (1931)

Mae Clarke as Elizabeth in a lace bridal gown and long veil in Frankenstein
Source: Frankenstein (1931) / Universal Pictures

Elizabeth has a bouquet, a long veil and a dress with a great deal of lace around the top. Mae Clarke wears the outfit in the 1931 Frankenstein. In the black-and-white photograph, the pale skirt spreads out well beyond her waist.

It's the sort of bridal portrait that could look perfectly reassuring in another film. Here, you know there's a monster somewhere in the story. The lace and flowers haven't changed, but they don't make the wedding feel safe.

And God Created Woman

Brigitte Bardot as Juliette wearing a high-necked lace dress and a short veil
Source: And God Created Woman (1956) / Criterion / Cocinor

Juliette marries Michel in Roger Vadim's 1956 film. Brigitte Bardot and Jean-Louis Trintignant play the couple, and the wedding gives Bardot this high-necked lace dress and short veil.

The close photograph is mostly about her face. Small flowers sit above the veil, the lace comes right up to her neck, and the pale fabric stands out against the dark background. It's easy to miss how much detail is in such a small area until you stop looking at Bardot and look at the collar.

Coming to America

Two views of Shari Headley as Lisa in a pink royal wedding gown in Coming to America
Source: Coming to America (1988) / Paramount Pictures

Shari Headley plays Lisa McDowell, who marries Eddie Murphy's Prince Akeem. On screen, Lisa's pink gown has a huge skirt, floral decoration and a train that belongs in a royal procession.

The color makes the outfit stand apart from the white gowns elsewhere in the gallery. It also suits a film that lets palace life be wonderfully excessive. Nothing about this wedding asks the bride to disappear into the background. The dress takes up space, and the ceremony gives it plenty.
