Put a young photo of a familiar actor beside a picture of their child and a small detail can suddenly jump out: a smile, a raised eyebrow, the way they look into the camera. This archive gallery brings together parents and children from film, television, fashion and music.
A note before you scroll: the ages printed on these original collages haven't been independently established from dated photographs. Some labels don't even match, and the Judds appear together in one photo. Treat these as family photo comparisons, rather than a verified same-age timeline. The original images and their source credits are retained below.
Ava Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon

Ava's hair is pulled up, while Reese has hers tucked back with sunglasses on her head. Both have red lipstick and a slight smile in these portraits. It's an easy pairing to linger over, especially around the eyes.
Ava is Reese and Ryan Phillippe's daughter. You may see one parent more strongly than the other; that's part of the appeal of looking through family pictures.
Alexander Skarsgård and Stellan Skarsgård

The crossed arms and dark sweater give Alexander's portrait a very different feel from the black-and-white street photo of his father. Stellan wears a light jacket and looks off to the side. The eyebrows and long faces help connect the two pictures.
Both are Swedish actors, though these images catch them in quite different clothes, settings and moods.
Dhani Harrison and George Harrison

Dhani's dark jacket and George's peaked cap couldn't be much further apart as wardrobe choices. Look past them and the shape of the eyebrows is easier to compare. Both portraits also show hair falling close to the face.
George was the Beatles' lead guitarist; his son Dhani became a musician too. The photographs give you the resemblance. Their recordings give you something else to compare.
Chris Pine and Robert Pine

Chris wears a trucker cap; Robert's portrait has a broad-brimmed hat. Those brims frame a similar direct look into the camera. There's a contrast between Chris's stubble and Robert's clean-shaven face, too.
Robert's own biography identifies Chris as his son and lists his work on CHiPs. One archive wrinkle: the old section heading said thirties, while the image labels say twenties. Neither establishes the photo dates.
Scott Eastwood and Clint Eastwood
This is the Eastwood pairing used at the top of the gallery, shown again in its original place. Scott's color portrait sits beside a black-and-white picture of Clint, with both looking away from the lens.
The narrowed eyes and swept-back hair make the comparison especially clear. Scott has spoken publicly about growing up with Clint as his father; there's no need to guess at their relationship from a photograph.
Gwyneth Paltrow and Blythe Danner

Gwyneth has long, straight hair and a fringe here. Her mother, Blythe, wears round sunglasses and has her hair tied back. The glasses hide some of the features you might otherwise compare, leaving the smiles and profile to do more of the work.
They've both worked as actors. This pairing is also a reminder of how much a haircut can change the impression a portrait makes.
Lily-Rose Depp and Vanessa Paradis

The lighting is much warmer on Vanessa's side of this collage. Lily-Rose's hair falls in loose waves, while Vanessa's is straighter. Both look just past the camera with their lips slightly parted.
Lily-Rose has talked about growing up around Chanel through her mother, Vanessa. Their fashion connection extends beyond these pictures, though the portraits themselves come without a verified date for either sitting.
Colin Hanks and Tom Hanks

Colin and Tom both turn slightly toward the camera, and each has a small, closed-mouth smile. The hair is different enough to keep the pictures distinct. Around the eyes, though, the family resemblance is easy to spot.
Colin has worked as an actor and documentary director. A still photograph can make the father-and-son comparison immediate; hearing them speak adds another way to notice the differences.
Kiefer Sutherland and Donald Sutherland

Kiefer appears in a shirt and tie, with short blond hair. Donald's black-and-white portrait is much scruffier, with longer hair and an uneven-looking beard. It's an unlikely match in styling, but the mouths and cheeks draw the eye across the dividing line.
They were father and son as well as fellow actors. You don't need matching haircuts to see why the archive put these two together.
Georgia May Jagger and Mick Jagger

Georgia May's blond hair and Mick's dark hair frame two very direct portraits. The mouths are the obvious place to start, but the serious expressions also make the comparison work.
Georgia May is the daughter of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall. She's worked as a model, a career she discussed in her own interviews.
Mamie Gummer and Meryl Streep

Mamie's hair is brushed away from her face; Meryl's is swept back on one side. Each looks toward the camera with only a hint of a smile. The portraits make it easy to compare the nose and outline of the jaw.
Mamie has described what it was like to become an actress with Meryl Streep as her mother.
Jason Ritter and John Ritter

The smiles do most of the work in this pairing. Jason and his father, John, both have dark hair, light eyes and broad grins, though Jason's face is turned farther to the side.
John, remembered for Three's Company, died in 2003. The Television Academy's biography identifies Jason and Tyler as his actor sons. This photo comparison catches a familiar expression across two generations of that family.
Sean Lennon and John Lennon

Round glasses and dark, untidy hair make this one of the gallery's most instantly recognizable pairings. Sean has facial hair in his portrait; John doesn't. Both look slightly away from the lens.
Sean is John Lennon and Yoko Ono's son and has made his own music. The shared styling is striking here, although glasses and a haircut can make two portraits feel more alike before you've compared anything else.
Brooklyn Beckham and David Beckham

The labels say 15 and 17, so this pairing never quite fitted the archive's old same-age title. We haven't verified either number from a dated original.
What you can see: Brooklyn, on the left, has his hair swept up; his father David has his brushed forward. Brooklyn wears yellow and black, David a red football shirt. Both face the camera, making their expressions easy to compare.
Zoë Kravitz and Lisa Bonet

Long dark hair, necklaces and a slight turn toward the camera link these portraits. Lisa is holding a child in her picture, so this isn't quite the same kind of tightly cropped comparison as some of the earlier collages.
Zoë is Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz's daughter. The long hairstyles make the family resemblance easier to notice in this pairing.
Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn

Kate's open smile and Goldie's broad grin make this a cheerful change of pace after several more serious portraits. Both have blond hair falling around their faces, with different cuts and curls.
Goldie and her daughter Kate have even interviewed each other about their work.
Sophie von Haselberg and Bette Midler

There's another age-label mismatch here. The collage calls Sophie thirty-three and Bette twenty-nine, despite the archive heading putting both at twenty-nine. We haven't established the dates of either photograph.
Sophie, Bette's daughter, smiles directly toward the camera in a bright pink top. Bette's black-and-white portrait catches her looking to the side. The different angles leave you to decide which features seem most alike.
Rashida Jones and Peggy Lipton

Two wide smiles make this pairing feel especially close, even though the backgrounds, clothes and hairstyles differ. Rashida has her hair pulled back, while Peggy's falls around her face.
Rashida has spoken about her mother, Peggy Lipton, in interviews, including a conversation with NPR after Peggy's death. Here, it's the curve of the smiles that pulls the two pictures together.
Joely Richardson and Vanessa Redgrave

You get two fairly serious looks here. Joely's hair is straighter and falls past her shoulders; Vanessa's curls frame a face turned a little farther to the side. Neither gives the camera a big grin.
Vanessa is Joely's mother. With the faces placed close together, the eyes are where the likeness first catches you. Then the different hairstyles start to pull the portraits apart again.
Gigi Hadid and Yolanda Hadid

Both modeling photos use an arm raised near the head, giving the collage a ready-made visual echo. The clothes, backdrops and lighting are quite different. Gigi's patterned outfit is set against darker scenery; Yolanda wears a pale top.
Yolanda has discussed her daughters' modeling careers in interviews. In this selection, mother and daughter share both a profession and a pose, which makes it harder to separate family resemblance from photographic styling.
Ireland Baldwin and Kim Basinger

The head turns almost match. Ireland and her mother, Kim, both look back toward the lens, with loose blond hair over their shoulders. Ireland's portrait is more tightly cropped, so you see less of the setting around her.
Their 2022 Red Table Talk appearance gave viewers a chance to hear them together. Here you just have two still portraits, and the similar pose makes the resemblance easier to notice.
Ashley Judd and Naomi Judd
Here's the gallery's clearest departure from the side-by-side format: Ashley and Naomi stand together in one event photograph. Naomi wears black; Ashley wears a turquoise dress. There are no separate age labels to compare.
Naomi, Ashley's mother and one half of the Judds with Wynonna, died on April 30, 2022. Her official legacy timeline records that date. Ashley's acting career belongs to a different branch of the family's entertainment story.
Michael Douglas and Kirk Douglas

Michael is on the left, Kirk on the right. Both wear suits and ties, and both are turned slightly away from the camera. The family resemblance around the chin is particularly noticeable in this selection.
To keep the generations straight: Michael is Kirk's son. Both had substantial acting careers, so the matching formal clothes aren't the only connection between them.
Jakob Dylan and Bob Dylan

These are performance pictures, with microphones, guitars and curls framing the two faces. Jakob's portrait is brighter, while Bob's has a darker stage background. The similar angle makes the family comparison easy to follow.
Jakob, Bob's son, fronts the Wallflowers. Their breakthrough album Bringing Down the Horse came out in 1996, long before these pictures were gathered into this gallery. There's plenty of music to explore beyond the resemblance.
Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen

Charlie has tousled hair in this color portrait. Martin's black-and-white image uses a sharper side part and stronger shadows. Both look toward the camera with serious expressions, bringing the mouths and jaws into focus.
Martin is Charlie's father. The collage leaves out the sound of their voices and the way they move on screen, so it's interesting to see how much of the resemblance comes through in these two still images alone.
Rumer Willis and Bruce Willis

Rumer's portrait sits beside an older black-and-white picture of her father, Bruce. Both have dark hair framing the face, although the cuts are very different. The shape of the mouth stands out across the two pictures.
Rumer is Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's daughter. The archive chose a father-and-daughter pairing here; you can notice the resemblance without treating individual features as a precise map of which parent contributed what.
Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford

Kaia looks back toward the camera in an outdoor picture, while Cindy smiles in an older snapshot. Their brown hair falls loosely around their faces. The different expressions make this a less exact pose match than the Hadid photographs.
Mother and daughter have both worked as models and spoken together about style. These are historical images; the age labels printed on the collage shouldn't be mistaken for independently checked photo dates.
Ziggy Marley and Bob Marley

Both men are smiling here, with long locks falling over their shoulders. Ziggy wears a tan jacket over a T-shirt; Bob has on a sleeveless sports top. The matching grins make this one of the warmer pairings in the archive.
Ziggy is Bob Marley's son and a musician himself.
Damon Wayans Jr. and Damon Wayans

The gallery ends with two closely cropped portraits and two small smiles. Damon Wayans Jr. has facial hair, while his father's face is clean-shaven. That difference gives you a useful starting point before comparing the eyes and mouths.
Father and son also played father and son in the CBS comedy Poppa's House, which premiered in 2024. Here, with no dialogue or comic timing to go on, the resemblance is all in the pictures.
